Job Advert

The vision of the University of Strathclyde is bold and transformational, placing it among the leading international technological universities.  This promises an institution that is vibrant, dynamic and internationally focused, carrying out cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary research, education and knowledge exchange with global partners.

The Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC), based at Cumbernauld near Glasgow in Scotland, is a brand new collaborative venture by the University’s highly rated Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, which aims to provide members with diverse scientific and technical expertise and to underpin and facilitate successful research, development, demonstration projects and programs.

Building the next generation of active power delivery networks requires a new technology, changes and novelty in the application of existing technology, optimisation of the existing asset infrastructure and significant changes in the operating practices applied by electrical utilities.  The PNDC is expanding its research and development team, with a particular focus on research, application and development of novel protection, automation and control solutions for present and future electric power networks. As such, we are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Research Assistant to contribute to, and with experience of, the area of power system modeling and simulation in order to develop and test new technologies and solutions in the field of electrical power systems. You will work on a wide range of technical projects, including implementation of new technologies in the fields of protection, control and automation; development/implementation of new schemes; and development/implementation of network and demand side management solutions.

To be considered for this post, you will have a good honours degree in electrical engineering, along with a comprehensive knowledge of electrical power systems and an appreciation of the associated protection, control and automation schemes presently implemented at distribution and transmission networks.  You will be capable of applying this knowledge in a highly practical environment as well as generating new ideas and visions. Confident in working on your own initiative as well as part of a wider research team, you will be experienced in working to and meeting set deadlines. You will be a skilled programmer with keen attention to detail and you will have some experience in the simulation of load flow and/or transients.  With a developing ability to plan and conduct individual research and knowledge exchange activity, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and will be confident in presenting complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Applicants should note that the PNDC is not easily accessible by public transport and as such own transport would be highly beneficial.
