The Role

The Department of Art is looking for two artists, one to join its BA Fine Art teaching team and another to join the B.A. Fine Art and History of Art team. The appointments are entry level, and we will consider applications for smaller fractional posts (i.e. 0.2fte or one day a week). Both the BA Fine Art and the B.A. Fine Art and Art History are leading programmes in the field of art education, and you will make a significant contribution to their delivery, organisation and development.

We are looking for artists with a PhD or equivalent qualification who can demonstrate both an engagement with their own practice, and who can respond to the varied and specific needs of undergraduates on these strongly student-centred courses. You will have a professional record of international standing, and preferably have experience of teaching in art school.

The Department

In the Department of Art we specialise in making, curating and writing about contemporary art in a dynamic, critical and interdisciplinary environment. We have a world leading reputation, and work with a network of artists, curators, galleries and museums both in London and internationally to create an inspiring and dynamic place in which to study and develop an artistic practice. Many graduates of the Department are among the most recognised names working in art today.

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed our place as one of the top fine art research departments in the country. We have an international reputation enables us to establish and maintain links with many prestigious institutions and university art departments across the world. This, together with the cosmopolitan nature of the student body, provides unique opportunities for students to develop cross-cultural collaborative projects.

We promote the making and understanding of contemporary art through practical and critical engagement between staff, students and the professional art world. We are committed to the idea that contemporary art is best taught through direct contact with artists, curators and writers, and our graduates develop careers shaped by their critical engagement with cutting edge artistic practice and research in these areas. We think it is crucial to see art as a continuing, transformative and transnational undertaking within the contemporary public world.

We offer two undergraduate honours degrees: BA Fine Art (75% Studio Practice and 25% Critical Studies) and BA Fine Art & History of Art (50% Studio Practice and 50% History of Art). The BA Fine Art & History of Art is a joint degree with History of Art provided by the Department of Visual Cultures.

The Department currently has 418 undergraduate students, 174 taught postgraduate students and 65 research students. Our 48 members of academic staff are skilled in innovative teaching and produce work that is exhibited and published internationally on a regular basis. We offer a range of full-time and part-time programmes including MPhil and PhD research degrees and taught Master's (MFA) degrees in Fine Art, Art Writing and Curating.The Department has a dynamic research culture. We are committed to taking our research and practice to a wider audience, and think that research in contemporary art should engender public debate. Research carried out by staff in the Department is both individual and collective, often produced in collaboration with galleries and museums, working at the cutting-edge of London's cosmopolitan art world. We believe that the link between research and practice is essential to the production of contemporary art, and to ensure that the highest standards of artistic and cultural research inform every level of the Department's teaching.

The Department of Art provides space for art studios, performance work, installations, temporary projects and exhibitions as well as a range of research laboratories. Each student is allocated a tutor and a studio space appropriate to their needs. The stunning Ben Pimlott Building provides purpose-built teaching space on campus, including art studios, lecture theatres, and digital media labs. Our specialist research laboratories integrate traditional processes and new technologies, and facilitate experimentation in the following areas:
-Casting -Constructed Textiles -Fine Art Printmaking -Digital Media -Metal -Photography -Print and Dye -Stitch and Fabric -Woodwork.
