Technician

University of Birmingham -Nihr Surgical Reconstrution and Microbiology Research Centre

Full Time

Fixed term appointment for three years

The National Institute for Health Research is supporting a major research programme into the microbiology of traumatic wound infection, within the Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre at Birmingham (SRMRC). As part of this expansion, we are seeking to recruit a full-time technician to underpin the Centre’s work on microbial diagnostics and host-pathogen interactions. The postholder will be based between the School of Biosciences (University of Birmingham) and the NIHR SRMRC, based at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the same campus. They will play a key role in supporting a group of clinical and non-clinical colleagues using advanced sequencing and microbiological techniques in order to identify new diagnostic and treatment strategies for dealing with traumatic wound infection.

The successful applicant will be able to combine laboratory skills (particularly in isolating and sequencing DNA and RNA from complex microbial cultures) with an administrative and organisational role in underpinning a diverse range of projects and overseeing the smooth day-to-day running of the research programme. An ability to work to tight deadlines and to be able to interact closely with a diverse range of research colleagues will be essential.

Applicants should be experienced in laboratory research with high competence in molecular DNA work and microbiological cultures. Experience of ‘next-generation’ sequencing techniques would be extremely advantageous.

Starting salary is normally in the range £20,823 to £22,370. With potential progression once in post to £25,897 a year.
