Aston University is seeking to appoint a Disability Support Manager to manage the Disability and Additional Needs Unit (DANU).
This new post is a management role within Student Services; a role which demands and supports a high performance staff culture and initiates change where you will:
- Lead on the development and enhancement of student disability services and support at Aston University.
- Have overall responsibility for the DANU team’s service
- Advise the University on strategic development initiatives and inclusive practices to support disabled students
- Have control of the DANU budget
Educated to degree level, you will have recent experience of working in a Higher Education disability service. You will have experience of working with students with mental health difficulties and Asperger’s' Syndrome, a thorough understanding of inclusive practices and experience of accessing funding and resources for students who are disabled. You will have good IT skills, excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to work productively under pressure.
The February 2013 survey of Aston University students with declared disabilities provided excellent feedback and information which will allow us to reposition the DANU service; moving it forwards to keep up with the changing expectations of our students and providing an inspirational and supportive experience – delivering high student satisfaction.
The University prides itself on its diversity and currently around 30% of its students are recruited from the EU or from overseas. Aston University undergraduate applications for 2013-2014 have risen by 25%, an uncommon trend across the sector. The quality and breadth of support for students with disabilities is fundamental to this role as is the importance of understanding student expectations.
DANU has 528 students on its books, equating to 4.9% of the overall student population of 10,800.
The Disability Support Manager will report to the Director of the Hub, Counselling & Disability Support.
