Salary: This appointment will be made on the Lecturer salary scale in line with current Government pay policy

Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor in Pharmacology. The postholder will provide teaching in pharmacology to dental and medical students. The successful candidate will assume responsibility for delivering a comprehensive course in pharmacology to students in the Dental Hospital. This includes dental science lectures, dental hygiene, dental post graduate course, and problem based learning tutorials, in addition to the assessment of undergraduate medical and dental students. 

This post includes the setting of multiple choice questions, extended choice questions and short essay questions, in addition to their assessment, as well as an input into the teaching content in association with the Dental School.

There will also be a contribution to the teaching of pharmacology to the 2nd, 3rd and final year medical students. A contribution to the setting and marking of examination questions is expected.

Standard duties of the Post

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach pharmacology to dental students;
  • Deliver problem based tutorials;
  • Set and mark examinations in pharmacology for the dental students and for 2nd and 3rd year medical students;
  • Contribute to the content of the dental teaching programme in association with the Dental School;
  • Teach pharmacology to 2nd, 3rd and final year medical students;
  • Contribute to teaching activities within the Department
  • Undertake such administrative responsibilities and/or any other duties as directed by the Head of Department

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Applicants will have a MB degree and/or a BSc degree in Pharmacology together with a good academic background having completed, or in the process of completing, a PhD in a relevant therapeutic area.

Knowledge & Experience

Teaching 

  • Given the extensive nature of the remit, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will have a wide understanding of pharmacology preferably with teaching experience involving medical or dental students, and be in a position to devise a comprehensive course in pharmacology.
  • Experience of both small and large group teaching at undergraduate level

Research

  • The successful candidate will have an active research interest in pharmacology, preferably in a therapeutic area that complements the Department’s research work.

Administration

  • Demonstrated potential to manage undergraduate pharmacology courses in the University setting
  • Experience in the development of pharmacology courses for medical and/or dental students
