The Faculty of Social Sciences at the LMU Munich is pleased to announce the following vacancy:

Professor for Political Economy (W2) with a focus on East and Southeast Europe (5 years/tenure track)


The successful candidate is expected to fully assume research and teaching responsibilities in the areas of (comparative) political economy especially within the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies as well as the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science. The position is located at the intersection of political science, political economy and economic sociology respectively.

The candidates’ research should focus on issues surrounding the analysis of change within post-socialist societies and especially on the relationship between politics and economics. This should involve a combination of theory driven research and a specialisation on the countries of east-central and southeast Europe and/or the successor states of the Soviet Union. Knowledge of at least one east European language and good national and international ties to the scientific community are a prerequisite.

It is expected that the successful candidate contributes to the social scientific profile of research on Eastern Europe in an interdisciplinary manner. He or she should significantly contribute to the newly founded Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies and be able to cooperate with other participating subjects as well as develop joint teaching and research projects, for example within the interdisciplinary master degree East European Studies. In addition, successful candidates should contribute to teaching and research at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science.

The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies is a joint facility of LMU Munich and the University of Regensburg. It is funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German state and federal governments from November 2012 until October 2017. A special feature of its research program is the analysis of connections and relations of east and southeast Europe with other regions of the world. Following subject groups contribute to the graduate school: history, literature, linguistics, fine arts, political science and law. With regard to the inter-regional comparative research other area studies also participate including sinology, Japanese Studies, North American Studies.

The appointment will occur according to civil service law for a period of five years as a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit). Following a positive evaluation of the professional, pedagogical and personal aptitude the post can be changed to a tenured position after three years at the earliest. In the framework of the LMU Academic Career Program there is also the possibility of increasing the professorship from W2 to W3 in exceptional cases and following excellent research and teaching achievements.
