The project focuses on diaspora formation and engagement in conflict settings, and its main outcome will be a book for publication in 2015. The main case being investigated is the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora, but other cases will be examined, including Somalis, Afghans, and possibly Palestinians. The UK, other parts of Europe, and North America will be the main sites for the research, but for the Research Officer most travel will be within the UK and other parts of Europe.
The Research Officer will assist the PI in overseeing the organisation and coordination of interviews by a small team of interviewers in the UK, other parts of Europe and North America. There will be some primary data gathering and analysis, including analysis of reports by international agencies, government bodies and civil society organisations; interviewing of officials and others in the UK, other parts of Europe and possibly North America (especially Canada), in conjunction with the PI; and interpretation of the 2001 and 2011 UK census. Analysis of this material and assistance with preparing it for publication are other components of the post.
To be considered candidates are required to have a doctorate in a relevant discipline closely related to the topic of the project and a proven record of excellent analytical and writing skills. Candidates should have experience of primary data gathering and analysis of qualitative data. Candidates need to have the ability to co-ordinate different strands of work, to work to deadlines, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and proven ability to work as part of a team.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 24 May 2013.
Interviews will most likely be held in the second week of June 2013.
