The role:
A unique opportunity for a recently qualified Earth Scientist professional, ideally Applied Geology, Mineralogy or Earth Sciences graduate to work on a joint project, under the Shorter Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme, between Petrolab Limited and Plymouth University. The aim is to embed a new automated mineral analysis capability into the company, giving them a considerable competitive advantage in mineral analysis over its competitors.

The person
Ideally, applicants should be recent graduates with an honours degree 2.1 or above in Applied Geology, Mineralogy or Earth Sciences related discipline. The post-holder should demonstrate a good understanding and knowledge of rock and ore petrography, in particular the identification of minerals and their chemical compositions.
Ideally the successful candidate will be skilled in optical and electron microscopy and X-ray analysis techniques and developing methods for data manipulation and interpretation for presenting to various audiences. Experience in research design and application for comparing historical data to optimise all aspects of the analysis process would be beneficial. Good communication and report writing skills are essential in translating complex findings effectively to academic and non-academic audiences. A professional approach, good leadership skills and ability to work independently and deliver to meet deadlines is essential.
The Company
Petrolab Limited is a small company who specialises in the mineralogical investigation of rocks, mineral resources and manufactured inorganic materials by microscope analysis. The business was established in 1991 but until recently (2009) the business model was centred on servicing demand for tests for ‘mundic’ concrete in the pre-1960’s housing of SW England. The company has reset its sights and as part of its strategic plan to become a major European provider of mineralogical investigation services by introducing a new automated mineralogical analysis solution to its clients, giving them significant competitive advantage. www.petrolab.co.uk
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships:
Employed by Plymouth University on a 26 week fixed term contract with the possibility of continuing employment with Petrolab Limited you will work under the supervision of academic staff from the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences.
