Applications are invited for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in the Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE), a collaboration between the University of Bath and Bournemouth University, with ROLI.
Programme This is a 4-year programme which embeds a Research Engineer (RE) in a company who, supported by an academic supervisor, will work on projects of immediate industrial relevance. 75% of the RE’s time will be spent in industry. These projects will form the basis of a Doctoral submission by portfolio thesis for the award of an Engineering Doctorate in Digital Media.
Research Area ROLI is a technology start-up. We use intuitive design to create integrated hardware and software products that increase the bandwidth of interaction between humans and computers. We are continually developing new possibilities for Human-Computer Interaction platforms, and we seek an outstanding candidate to explore augmented reality on mobile devices, particularly in the context of games. The research opportunity is to address the challenge of using augmented reality in pervasive contexts, most notably in games and music, but looking forward to wider applications via improved HCI.
The portability of tablets offers unique opportunities for games and novel experiences. However, camera-based movement recognition on tablets typically has a very low definition and high latency. In contrast, the Kinekt and Leap Motion offer higher definition and lower latency, but they are not well integrated with mobile devices. The challenge is to create great experiences in a low definition / high latency context that take advantage of the portability of tablets.
Package If successful you will receive a generous package which pays your tuition fees and provides a tax free annual stipend of at least £15,266. There is also dedicated funding for resources and conference attendance.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will combine professional experience of app development with expertise of video processing, computer vision and optical motion capture. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are a must.
Applicants should hold a good degree (at least an Upper Second) in Computer Science or a closely-related qualification. Candidates from other backgrounds with demonstrable expertise in software development in the context of mobile apps, augmented reality and/or computer vision will be considered.
Eligibility Applicants must be ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK or EU. Please see http://digital-entertainment.org/info-applicants.html for more details.
