Deputy Director

Centre for English Language Education

Salary: An attractive package, including accommodation allowance, flights and insurance will be provided for international appointments.
Location: Ningbo China
Closing Date: Friday, 31st May 2013

Fixed Term

Since the development of the Nottingham-Ningbo campus in 2004, the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) has aimed to promote high quality EAP teaching in its structure and support of academic programmes delivered in China. Housed within the UK-based School of Education and currently with around 70 academic staff, the CELE operation at UNNC is now one of the largest of its kind in the world and caters to over 3000 students on its Preliminary Year, Pre-Masters and Academic Support Unit programmes.

Throughout the academic year, the Centre is also actively involved in the delivery of English language assessment, teaching training, and the delivery of bespoke courses in various aspects of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and there are ambitious plans for further expansion in each of these areas in 2013 and beyond. As part of this ongoing expansion, the Centre now seeks a Deputy Director to work in conjunction with the Head, one further Deputy Director and the wider management team to help take CELE to the next stage of its development.

Applications are therefore invited from suitably qualified English language teaching professionals able to offer significant experience in the following areas: ELT/EAP/ESP management, Teacher Training/Professional Development (experience as a trainer/examiner for internationally recognized qualifications e.g. DELTA, would be advantageous), EAP/ESP teaching, EAP/ESP syllabus and curriculum design, pre-sessional and in-sessional provision in EAP e.g. the development of discipline-specific academic support, Self-Access facilities etc.

Following their appointment, the successful candidate will assist in the ongoing day to day management and strategic leadership of the Centre, with a particular emphasis on further developing in-sessional provision under the auspices of the Academic Support Unit.

Candidates should have substantial experience of ELT/EAP and working within Higher Education contexts, including experience of teaching overseas, preferably in mainland China. Candidates should also be able to offer a strong sense of academic credibility, as evidenced by knowledge of and contributions to the wider ELT/EAP field. Experience of academic project management at a senior level is essential, together with the ability to manage, support and evaluate the performance of others. As a bare minimum, candidates should have an MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics or equivalent, while formally recognised teacher training experience and qualifications, along with a particular interest and track record in delivering pre-sessional and in-sessional support services, would be a distinct advantage.

Salary will be within the range RMB 380,452 - RMB 454,279 per annum, depending on skills and qualifications, plus a responsibility allowance of RMB 25,000 per annum. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance. An attractive package, including accommodation allowance, flights and insurance will be provided for international appointments.

The post is available from 2 September 2013 initially to be offered on fixed-term contracts with the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for periods of up to five years. Contracts may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Mr Douglas Bell, Head of the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) email: douglas.bell@nottingham.edu.cn. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.

Interviews to be held on 28 June 2013. Candidates will be required to attend in Nottingham or Ningbo China depending on their current location.
