Job Description
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Durham University invites applications for a postdoctoral position, to begin in October 2013 for a 36 month period. The position is funded by an EPSRC grant entitled 'Topology, geometry and Laplacians of simplicial complexes', which is a joint project between pure mathematicians and theoretically oriented computer scientists. Candidates with research interests in discrete geometry, geometry and analysis on groups, or topology are encouraged to apply. The researcher will work independently on projects within the general area of research supported by the grant, as well as on
specific projects in collaborations with the grant holders.

Responsibilities
The postholder will
- Play an active role in identifying suitable directions, within the broad framework of the grant, to best advance the overall research programme.
- Carry out first class research and present his/her work at seminars, both internally and externally, and at international conferences, and will publish results in international scientific journals and open access electronic archives.
- Conduct individual and collaborative research projects.
- Use initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
- Liaise with research colleagues in both pure mathematics and theoretical computer science and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
- Plan and manage their own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
