Visiting Academic
Teaching Jersey Civil and Criminal Procedure Including Profesional Ethics
Institute of Law, Jersey
Stipend: £3,300 a year (plus further fees of approximately £1,750 for examining)
Starting: October 2013 (or as soon as possible thereafter)
Applications are invited for a part-time appointment at the Institute of Law, co-teaching and examining Jersey law relating to civil and criminal procedure and professional ethics.
The successful candidate will have strong teaching skills, expertise in civil and criminal procedure law in a common law jurisdiction, expertise in teaching legal professional ethics, with an ability rapidly to acquire familiarity about Jersey approaches to these fields. He or she will have the ability to inspire the confidence of students enrolled on the Jersey Law Course, who are busy practitioners studying part-time to qualify as Jersey advocates and solicitors. Most students are lawyers already qualified in other jurisdictions.
The approach to teaching needs to be academically rigorous and practical. Teaching will take place over two study weekends (co-taught by the visiting academic and a Jersey practitioner), at tutorials (by local practitioners working under the guidance of the visiting academic), and revision sessions (led by the visiting academic with input from other members of the team). Overall, approximately 30 hours of direct contact time with the class is expected.
There is a comprehensive study guide for the subject (available on the Institute website), which the visiting academic will take on responsibility for updating and developing.
