Job Purpose / Summary
The Toxicology Department is within the research division of CRCE. The department undertakes research in chemicals and radiation that underpins advice and policy. Interest in these environmental hazards ranges from methods to analyse, model and calculate exposure assessment, effects and mechanisms of environmental hazards on health (adverse health effects) and the role of genetics in conferring differential risk to environmental hazards.

This post will develop expertise in asthma within the Air Pollution and Climate Change Group in the Toxicology Department of PHE. The post is largely desk based and will be expected to interact closely with a laboratory based post in asthma that is located within the Xenobiotic Toxicity Group of the same department. The post-holder will then be expected to develop a longer-term literature based research program focussed on allergens leading to asthma and other inflammatory lung conditions and the effect of genetic differences leading to susceptibilities. Outcomes of this research will inform on the work being undertaken in the laboratory research program. The post-holder will be expected to contribute to papers and written answers for the Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollution and other PHE stakeholders on asthma or related inflammatory lung conditions as required. Interaction with the department of Extreme Events and Health Protection will also be expected in respect of allergens leading to asthma linked to extreme weather events.
