PhD scholarship - Research into the psychosocial needs of people living with dementia

University of the West of England, Bristol

Ref: PhD HLS13
£13,760 stipend per annum, starting October 2013

The aim of the scholarship is to support an innovative research project that builds on current expertise within the Mental Health Sciences research group. We have provided three project descriptions which are examples of innovative projects that adapt research models taken from other areas of psychological research, and which explore whether these throw new light on the psychosocial needs of people living with dementia. However, we will also consider applicants who can set out a convincing argument for adapting other forms of theory-driven psychosocial research into the needs of people living with dementia and their families.

  • The impact of nostalgia on positive affect, self-esteem, social connectedness and the ability to find meaning in life for people with dementia.
  • Is recovery a valid model for dementia care?
  • Awareness into the diagnosis of dementia – validating the Markers of Assimilation of Problematic Experiences in Dementia scale (MAPED).

The scholarship is available from 1 October 2013 and consists of an annual stipend of £13,760, subject to satisfactory progress. In addition, full-time tuition fees will be covered for 3 years (Home/EU rates only). Applicants normally required to cover overseas fees will be required to cover the difference between the Home/EU and the overseas tuition fee rates (approximately £7,565 per annum).

Applicants must have a good honours degree (2.1 or equivalent), ideally in Psychology, Nursing or a related subject. Practical experience and/or knowledge of dementia are desirable but not essential.

Prospective candidates wishing to informally discuss an application should contact Professor Rik Cheston, (0117 3288927 (w), 07587 858910 (m), richard.cheston@uwe.ac.uk.
