Senior Research Fellow/Principal Research Fellow Biostatistics
University of Tasmania -Menzies Research Institute and the Faculty of Health Science
This appointment is for a three year term and any expectation of it continuing is dependent on the appointee securing sufficient ongoing research funding. The longer-term sustainability of the position is based on success in attracting consultancy and other grant-related income.
The Menzies Research Institute Tasmania (Menzies) is a major biomedical and health research institute which is co-located with the Faculty of Health Science (Faculty) based at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and is located in the new Medical Science Precinct (MSP), incorporating a world-class biomedical and clinical research facility. The Biostatistics Unit at Menzies has considerable experience in providing statistical advice to researchers engaged in biomedical, clinical, population and health services research.
As outlined in Opening UTAS to Talent: the UTAS Academic paper, an academic at either of these levels is expected to make a significant overall contribution to the University and their organisational unit across the mix of activities in which they are involved. He/she will, undertake independent research and/or scholarship, contribute to teaching and show evidence of individual initiative but may continue to be mentored by more senior staff. The performance expectations for this fulltime research position should be aligned with the required productivity to compete for national funding, and exceed those of combined teaching/research positions elsewhere in the university. Most research staff at Menzies supervise multiple (3-4) postgraduate students, generate an average over $200,000 each year in grant money and publish 7-10 papers each year in good or excellent journals.
The Senior Research Fellow/Principal Research Fellow will assist in providing strategic direction to the unit, exercise expertise and leadership in the provision of statistical support services, and foster excellence in research performance. To accomplish this, the Senior Research Fellow/Principal Research Fellow will use his/her excellent grasp of basic statistical concepts and emerging mastery of statistical methodology to provide high standard statistical support and data analysis, to plan analytical strategies, to identify opportunities to undertake research and improve planned research, and to supervise junior statisticians.
Applicants should possess a PhD in biostatistics, mathematics or a relevant field. Depending on the level of appointment the applicant will need to demonstrate excellent or outstanding academic merit in a field relevant to the position, as evidenced by original contributions to research. Applicants will also need to demonstrate a record of gaining external funding and a significant publication record that satisfies the performance expectations for this level as outlined in Opening UTAS to Talent: the UTAS Academic.
The appointment will be at Academic Level C or D, depending on qualifications, and will have a total remuneration package of up to $131,662 per annum (comprising salary within the range $98,207- $112,532 plus 17percent superannuation) for Level C and up to $150,648 per annum (comprising salary within the range $117,305 - $128,759) for Level D.
