Post-Doctoral Research Associate
in Embedded Fibre Optic Sensing in high Temperature Turbine Systems by using Additive Layer Manufacturing Technology
Heriot-Watt University -School of Engineering and Physical Sciences - Institute of Photonics & Quantum Sciences
Salary £29,541 - £36,298 – 2 years
The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences is looking for an enthusiastic and talented Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on an interdisciplinary project in the Applied Optics and Photonics group within the Institute of Photonics & Quantum Science.
The international, collaborative project, funded by the European Union under a FP7 grant, aims to develop fibre optics sensor technology for temperature and strain monitoring in gas turbine components as used in power generation systems to allow operation of such systems at higher temperatures then are used currently. The ability to monitor component temperatures will dramatically improve efficiency and safe operation of such plant. This is a highly interdisciplinary project which includes aspects of fibre optic sensing, metallurgy and additively layer manufacturing technologies.
Applicants must have a PhD in experimental physics or engineering with hand-on expertise in one or more fields of lasers and laser based manufacturing including additive layer manufacturing, materials technology and fibre optical systems. Additional expertise in computational modelling and LabView based data acquisition is valuable. The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. Robert Maier, alongside other Research Associates and PhD students in a growing group with an international make-up. We are looking for creative and highly motivated researchers willing to work as part of a team. The post is for two years in the first instance.
Informal enquiries should be made to the principal investigator:
