This is a rare and fantastic opportunity to work with a team to design, implement and maintain an integrated, scalable High Performance Computing and private cloud infrastructure that will underpin informatics research at the leading edge of both Life Sciences and Medical research.
Working under the supervision of the Head of Computing you will be involved in the design and configuration of High Performance Computing infrastructure that will support the College of Life Sciences and the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and at the University of Dundee.
The role holder will provide a leadership role within the Research Computing Infrastructure team and will work closely with computationally demanding research groups in the College of Life Sciences to design, promote and maintain the infrastructure solutions that these groups require to enable their extensive research portfolios.

The College of Life Sciences is one of the largest and most productive research institutes in Europe, employing over 1100 staff represent no fewer than 58 different nationalities with a focus on excellence in both research and service support systems. We collaborate with the world’s major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the fight against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
The Research Computing Infrastructure team operate a significant High Performance Computing Infrastructure consisting of a Linux cluster, extensive VMware virtualisation and over 1PB storage including parallel GPFS filesystems. These systems are linked together via 10Gb Ethernet and InfiniBand networks.
Principle Duties:
- Design of High Performance Computing Architecture.
- Installation, configuration and maintenance of Windows (2008/2012) and Linux (RHEL/Centos/Ubuntu) based x86 systems.
- Installation, configuration and maintenance of Fibre Channel storage arrays and storage area networks.
- Installation, configuration and maintenance of low latency interconnects such as InfiniBand and 10Gb Ethernet.
- Management and configuration of Apache/IIS web servers and JBOSS, Java Enterprise Edition systems.
