The Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD) has an international reputation for research on critical challenges to the theory and practice of democracy. One of CSD’s collaborations, led by Professor Graham Smith, is the development of Participedia: a global open-access platform for researchers and practitioners in the field of democratic innovation and public engagement. See www.participedia.net.

Professor Smith has funding under the ESRC Connected Communities project “The social, historical, cultural and democratic context of civic engagement” to investigate the challenges and opportunities of using such an open access platform.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development of Participedia’s research functionality through the collection and analysis of data on a particular form of participation (for example participatory budgeting in the UK) and/or an analysis of the usability and reliability of the data generated by the platform.

The successful candidate will be expected to have specialist knowledge of participatory initiatives and/or statistical methods. Experience of working on web-based projects and as part of a dispersed research team would be advantageous.
