Ageing model for lithium ion cells

University of Warwick -Warwick Manufacturing Group

Li-ion batteries currently form a crucial part of the electrified power-train. Li-ion batteries have a number of ageing mechanisms, these manifest themselves as a slow loss in the amount of energy the battery can store and reduction in the amount of power the battery can produce over vehicle life. It is crucial to understand how the battery behaviour will change over time and the effects on wider vehicle system. This is dependent on testing the battery and modelling the ageing effects across vehicle usage cycles.

To understand the causes of battery ageing and its effects on system behaviour it is key to develop a mathematical model describing the electrochemical and physical processes that occur inside a battery. Such a model couples the dynamics occurring in the electrical, chemical and thermal domains of the electrochemical cell.
