Evaluating the potential of constructed wetland features for mitigating the impact of pesticide losses from agricultural land
University of Warwick -School of Engineering
Start date: Summer 2013
Most pesticides in raw waters can be removed by treatment processes employed by water supply companies. However, some active ingredients are more difficult to remove. Even where significant removal is possible, very high concentrations in raw waters may occasionally present compliance challenges. There is pressure to find alternative solutions to supplement improvements in treatment technologies and the focus has started to shift to source control options. This project will investigate the potential for reducing pesticide transfers from land to surface waters using field- and ditch-scale mitigation features. A range of farm-scale attenuation features such as existing drainage channels, ponds and ditch-scale features, along the lines of constructed wetlands, will be studied and their performance on the degradation of pesticide pollutants will be quantified. The study will quantify the impact of different implementation scenarios at the catchment scale using mathematical modelling.
