The Birmingham Particle Physics group has a vacancy for a Computer Officer, initially for 2 years, with the possibility of extension, depending on continued external funding. The successful applicant will work in a team of two, alongside the senior systems administrator, in meeting all aspects of the group’s computing needs. The role will include administration and support for the Birmingham `Tier 2’ site on the GridPP distributed computing network. It will also include support and development of Grid-enabling software to be used by members of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. There will be a contribution to general support for local computing in Birmingham, including the `Tier 3’ farm, local linux desktops and general system infrastructure.
The successful applicant will hold a first degree (and ideally a higher degree) in either Physics or Computer Science. (S)he will have a thorough understanding of Linux systems and of computer networking, as well as experience of programming in C++, Python, or other object-oriented languages. Experience of data analysis in particle physics research or of the GridPP project will be desirable. The post holder must enjoy working independently and as part of a team.
The Birmingham Particle Physics group currently has 24 post doctoral research and academic staff, 8 support staff and 20 research students. Our present activities include ATLAS and LHCb at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, and NA62 on the CERN SPS. The group is very well equipped with desktop computing facilities and operates PC farms both for internal and for Grid work.
The School of Physics and Astronomy is one of the largest in the UK and was awarded Grade 5 for the excellence of its research in the last HEFCE Research Assessment Exercise. It takes in around 180 undergraduates a year and has over 100 academic and research staff, 120 graduate students and 35 technical support staff.
