University of Siegen -English Department / Linguistics

With its 17,500 students and 1,600 employees, of whom approximately 1,000 are engaged in scholarly work, the University of Siegen is an innovative university oriented to interdisciplinary collaboration. At the University’s Faculty I (Philosophische Fakultät), a university chair position Universitätsprofessur (salary group W3 BBesO) is currently available in the English Department / Linguistics.

Applicants must be able to integrate the full spectrum of English Linguistics in accordance with international standards into their scholarly work. The focus of their research should be within the main areas of systematic linguistics in English (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics) and encompass work on both theoretical approaches and empirical studies. Expert knowledge of an additional branch of linguistics (e.g., language acquisition, corpus linguistics, pragmatics, theory of language) is advantageous. Requirements include an excellent command of the English language, experience abroad, and successful acquisition of external funding.

Teaching and examination duties relate both to B.A. and M.A. programs in linguistics and to the linguistics-oriented segments of the teacher training program.

In addition to the basic requirements for civil servants, the prerequisites also include: a university degree; a significant aptitude for academic research, as conventionally indicated by the quality of one’s doctorate work; additional academic work which is to be exclusively and comprehensively evaluated in the course of the application review procedure; considerable teaching experience; and documented didactic competence. Additional academic work is to have been accomplished within the context of an assistant professorship, by means of post-doctorate qualifications (Habilitation), or through scholarly work at a tertiary institution or a non-university research institute, or within the context of other academic work.

Applicants are expected to engage in active and constructive cooperation in the context of the university’s self-administrating committees and organizations.
