The section European Law of the Public Law Institute offers courses in the Bachelor’s Law Programme, the LL.M. Programme in European Law and the Advanced LL.M. Programme in European and International Business Law. The section European Law has a vacancy for a: Teaching & Research Staff Member/ PhD Fellow European Law (38 hours per week).

The PhD Fellow will carry out doctoral research on the basis of an individual research proposal falling within one of the areas of expertise of the department and will teach courses in the field of EU law. Our research is part of the faculty research programme ‘Securing the Rule of Law in a World of Multi-Level Jurisdiction’. The research will be carried out under the supervision of one of the professors of our department.

Requirements

  • Degree in law with a specific focus on European law;
  • An explicit interest in European law;
  • Research qualities demonstrated by a final dissertation and/or publications;
  • Teaching experience is not a requirement, but is considered an advantage;
  • An excellent command of the English language, knowledge of the Dutch language is considered an advantage.

Tasks

  • Conduct PhD research;
  • Support the professors active in the fields related to the PhD research;
  • Participate in and organise scientific activities within the framework of the research project (lectures, conferences, seminars);
  • Publish one of more articles in the course of the research in (international) journals;
  • Carry out research funded externally and for external clients;
  • Teach courses in the field of European law at bachelor and master level;
  • Supervise students’ work on writing theses and papers.

We offer

  • A position as a Teaching/Research Staff Member 1 and PhD Fellow (Dutch: Docent 4/Promovendus) in the university function classification system;
  • The position is initially for a period of one year as a Teaching/ Research Staff Member. During this year, the employee will carry out teaching and prepare an elaborate research proposal. Following this year the period of employment may be continued within the framework of a PhD fellow trajectory for five year. During the doctoral research, an evaluation will take place in order to decide on a renewal of the contract. In this evaluation, the progress made towards completion of the PhD project and the progress in teaching skills will be assessed.
  • This is a full-time position.
  • Salary scale in accordance with the CAO (Collective Labour Agreement) for Dutch universities. Initial gross monthly salary is € 2.403,-- per month (scale 10, salary number 0) and will be increased yearly up to a maximum of € 3.007,-- (scale 10 salary number 6).
  • Starting date: Summer 2013
