Twenty years of the ‘Oslo peace paradigm’: an assessment of its achievements and limitations

Kenyon Institute, Jerusalem

£24,000 per annum + allowances
18 months fixed term

The CBRL is looking to recruit a Research Fellow to run its new research programme analysing the achievements and limitations of the ‘Oslo peace paradigm’ instituted by the signing of the Declaration of Principles (otherwise known as the Oslo Peace Accord) between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation in 1993. The project will explore the successes and limitations (economic and political) of the Oslo peace paradigm for: i) Palestinians in the West Bank; ii) Palestinians in Gaza; iii) Palestinians in East Jerusalem; and iv) Israelis (Jewish-Israelis and Palestinian-Arab-Israelis). Field research will not be conducted in Palestinian refugee communities in neighbouring countries, although the impact of their exclusion from the paradigm will be part of the project.

Based at the Kenyon Institute in Jerusalem, you will be part of a four-person team that includes the Kenyon Institute director and two part-time local academic researchers. The successful appointee will conduct new field-based research in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

The position is ideally suited for a holder of a PhD in sociology, politics, international relations, anthropology, development studies or related disciplines. Previous fieldwork experience in the Middle East (preferably in the oPt) and good Arabic language skills are essential.

The CBRL is an independent academic organization that supports humanities and social science research in the Levant. As well as offering research grants, the CBRL runs two local institutes (the British Institute in Amman and the Kenyon Institute in East Jerusalem) that provide bases for visiting scholars, run active lecture and seminar programmes, and work closely with local research institutions.

The successful candidate will be appointed on a fixed term contract from 1 October 2013 to 30 April 2015. Inquiries about the position should be addressed to Dr Mandy Turner, director of the Kenyon Institute (director@kenyon-institute.org.uk).
