The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a leading global institution for research, teaching and communications on international development based on the University of Sussex, Brighton.  

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead our finance function and we are looking for an experienced and qualified accountant to take on this challenging and rewarding role.  Working with the Director and Director of Strategic Operations you will develop the Institute’s financial strategy and financial and budgetary policies, ensuring that necessary supporting systems and processes are in place; and to enhance the Institute’s financial management information to support effective decision making. 

You will lead the Finance Department staff in developing a business partner model,, delivering a high quality, informed and continuously improving service to other teams and departments across the Institute. In addition, you will have a key role to play in many aspects of the strategic financial management of the Institute and you should have a demonstrable track record in this area.

The successful candidate will have a CCAB recognised accountancy qualification and be educated to at least degree standard or equivalent. You will also be familiar with financial reporting requirements of SORP (Charities) and experience of working in a finance team in a similar senior role.

You will have the ability to manage a complex work programme and competing demands and priorities and respond effectively to quickly changing circumstances and priorities.

You will be an experienced and competent staff manager, and will have the ability to lead effective communication internally and externally on the Institute’s financial activities. Candidates should be used to dealing with funders and developing financial policies and procedures.

Salary: Initial appointment will be between £41,785 and £51,939 per annum, notional, (depending on experience), in the IDS Grade 8 range.
