Project outline
Different modalities and intensities of exercise training have been shown to induce considerable cardiometabolic health benefits. Beneficial changes in cardiorespiratory fitness and metabolic risk factors have been reported by exercise training without weight loss. Less is known about the dose response effects of different exercise prescriptions on metabolic flexibility to lipid, adipose tissue metabolism and insulin resistance. Moreover, information is required on the effects of exercise in individuals with existing chronic conditions, such as obesity, polycystic ovarian syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes. Consequently, further research is needed to identify the exercise effects on metabolic responses to lipid, particularly within patients with endocrine disorders. This studentship will address these issues and in doing so will extend knowledge regarding the capacity of different exercise prescriptions to improve metabolic flexibility in response to high fat and cardiometabolic health. The studentship will involve close multi-disciplinary research collaboration with the HONEI (Humber, Obesity, Nutrition, Education and Innovation) project, part of the Centre for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (CCMR) at Hull York Medical School (HYMS).
Applicants should have:
- a good first degree in Sport and Exercise Science (with a large component of exercise physiology/sports nutrition), Physiology, Human Biology, Nutrition or related disciplines. An MSc in one of these areas would also be advantageous
- Experience of physiological exercise testing, body composition analysis and basic biochemical techniques would be advantageous. In addition, applicants should have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as confidence in research methods.
Further details
This full-time UK/EU PhD scholarship will include fees at the 'home/EU' student rate and maintenance of £13,726 (in 2013/14) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.
PhD students at the University of Hull are required to follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate or Diploma in Research Training in addition to their research degree.
