We’re a unique, high profile organisation with an excellent reputation, home to world-class science and cutting-edge technology. Every day, we challenge the ordinary because we believe in the best. The best for our customers and the best for your career.

The role
It’s an incredibly exciting time to join the Met Office Radar R&D teams. We’re working on an ambitious engineering project to refurbish and upgrade our network of radars with state-of-the-art Dual Polarisation technology. But, the technology is of little use without bright minds, just like yours, to scientifically analyse and support the systems.

Using your great scientific knowledge, you’ll contribute to the research, development and operational implementation of the advanced hardware and signal processing improvements to our radar network. Put simply, you’ll help us make the best possible use of data to achieve the best possible outcomes for our customers. How will you do it? We’d like you to develop and evaluate algorithms that optimise Dual Polarisation parameters and improve our quantitative precipitation estimates. Our forecasters rely on radar systems to gage the most accurate day-to-day and severe weather forecasters. Your work will ultimately help them and ensure that millions of people can prepare and keep safe whatever the weather.

The person
Firstly, you’ve a degree in a physical science subject or equivalent professional experience. For the Scientist level, we’d like you to have a PhD in Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing or another discipline related to Radar. Wherever you come from, you’ll come with a good knowledge of programming in C, C++ or Python. As an analytical problem solver, you feel confident manipulating and analysing large, complex sets of data. You’re scientifically minded too, but able to communicate your work clearly to non-technical people, both on paper and in person. Proactive, credible and a real team player, you’ll work effectively both as an independent scientist and with others in your team.
