We wish to recruit a Research Project Support Officer to work as part of a small team, contributing to the science that underpins fisheries advice to the Isle of Man Government in relation to the management of fisheries resources under its jurisdiction. The team will be based full time in the Isle of Man and will sit within the Department of Environment, Forestry and Agriculture where they will provide an independent source of scientific advice. The team will build on the successful relationship that has been forged between scientists, the fishing industry and the Government on the Isle of Man resulting in MSC accreditation of the queen scallop fishery in 2011. Fisheries on the island are dominated by shellfish (scallops, crab and lobster) and offer substantial potential for innovation in sustainable fisheries science and governance.

You will be able to demonstrate experience of working independently in the field and strong analytical and writing skills. The Support Officer will be expected to contribute actively to the development of the work programme and as a member of staff of the University may be able to register for a PhD through published works.

It is essential that applicants show evidence of the ability to work in isolation from the main campus. You will have the support of a highly active research group (http://fisheries-conservation.bangor.ac.uk) and University facilities within the School of Ocean Sciences. Successful candidates must be capable of passing an ENG1 sea-going medical, be physically fit and able to work at sea on a variety of vessels in sometime rough sea conditions. A clean and valid driving license is essential. The post is initially for a period of 24 months from June 2013 (subject to a probationary period) with the possibility of further extension.
