Goldsmiths, University of London -Educational Studies

The Role

Working within the Department of Educational Studies, which offers large Primary and Secondary PGCE Programmes, as well as a growing involvement in School Direct. You will be an effective and forward-looking leader for these programmes, who is committed to the principles of equity and diversity, and who will build on our flourishing partnership with local schools.

You will have a relevant first degree; QTS; a higher degree at Masters level or above.

We will consider candidates from both a school and a university background.

The Department

The Department of Educational Studies, with its ethos of research and teaching excellence, is one of the largest departments. It has a successful track record in international and funded research and distinguished publications; a thriving doctoral programme, large primary and secondary Initial Teacher Education programmes, as well as postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. The Department includes three Research Centres: Language, Culture and Learning; the Arts and Learning Identities and Social Justice.

Initial Teacher Education

The vacancy arises from the secondment of Sue Dixon to the post of Associate Pro-warden at Goldsmiths, a three-year appointment.

The ITE Programme is the Department’s largest, and has several components – Primary (227 places in 2013/14); Secondary (137 places); a School Direct programme involving both primary and secondary schools (approx. 70 places). At secondary level, we offer courses in Art & Design, Drama, English, and Geography, Maths, Modern Languages (including Community Languages) and Science. We offer SKE programmes in Maths and Science. We are involved in the Royal Greenwich Teaching School Alliance, and have enhanced partnership arrangements with many schools, including Early Years Providers.

As a Department we are strongly committed to principles of equity, creativity and the recognition of diversity. Our strengths in these areas have been recognised by Ofsted (2011), which has graded our ITE programme as ‘2’ with some outstanding features.
ITE is organised through two programme teams, Primary and Secondary, with some overlap between them. Each team is co-ordinated by a course leader, and includes colleagues with designated responsibilities for school partnership.
