Summary:

We are seeking two individuals to join our historical research team based at the University of Sheffield and at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London. The posts are on the Economic and Social/Arts and Humanities Research Councils (ESRC/AHRC) funded project, ‘Intoxicants and Early Modernity: England c.1580-c.1740’, led by Principal Investigator Professor Phil Withington (Department of History, University of Sheffield) and Co-Investigators Dr Angela McShane (Research Department, V&A) and Michael Pidd (Humanities Research Institute, University of Sheffield).

The project aims to explore the social, economic, political, and cultural significance of intoxicants between 1580 and 1740, to enrich and enhance contemporary debates about intoxicants from a fully researched historical perspective, and to develop a public and interactive web database in the manner of the Proceedings of the Old Bailey Online and London Lives projects (see http://www.oldbaileyonline.org and http://www.londonlives.org).

You will undertake core duties on the project: analysing primary source materials from a range of archives and recording key information into a database; developing research publications based on the data; organising workshops and events; delivering public lectures; and editing a significant collection of essays.

You will have a postgraduate degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject area together with a good working knowledge of the early modern period. Both post-holders will have archival research experience and one will be willing to work with material and visual sources. The exact allocation of roles is open to negotiation and will be based on the skills of the successful applicants. However, it is expected that:

Post 1: will be based in the south-east and will use the V&A as a working base.

Post 2:  will be based at the University of Sheffield and work on northern records, though some time will spent in London.

These posts are fixed-term for a period of 3 years and are available from 1 October 2013 until 30 September 2016.
