PhD Studentship in Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials: The Use of Perovskite-type Oxygen-carriers for Hydrogen Production via Chemical Looping

The main technology for H2 production is via steam reforming of hydrocarbons (usually natural gas) with COas an undesired by-product of the process. However, with chemical looping, CO2 can easily be separated for subsequent sequestration while producing high purity H2.

This technology requires a solid oxygen carrier to provide oxygen for fuel oxidation; the reduction of water generates H2. Therefore, the development of a suitable material to be used as an oxygen carrier for hydrogen production via chemical looping technology at an industrial scale is of paramount importance. The suitability of perovskites or hybrid materials combining with perovskite and metal oxides for use as oxygen carriers will be the prime focus of this research.

This project will be supported by activities of our group The Applications of Ion Transport Group at Newcastle University as part of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Supergen Hub.

Eligibility Criteria

You should have an upper-second-class Honours degree or higher or international equivalent, in Chemical Engineering, or a related subject.

The award is available to UK/EU applicants. In the case of outstanding international candidates it may be possible that the University will make an award to cover the difference in tuition fees. If English is not your first language, you should have IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

You must also have the potential for performing original research.
