Senior Research Scientist in Stem Cell Biology and Retinal Neuroscience

University of Oxford - Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN)

John Radcliffe Hospital

The Clinical Ophthalmology Research Group is seeking a highly-motivated Senior Research Scientist to lead a research project funded by OxStem Ocular. The Senior Research Scientist will work with collaborators in the Department of Chemistry to identify small molecules capable of reprogramming or stimulating endogenous retinal precursor cells in order to stimulate the regeneration of photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium.

The research project will involve high throughput phenotypic screening of small molecules in tissue-specific cell cultures. The Senior Research Scientist will lead a research team developing and optimising drug screening assays to detect cellular differentiation and regeneration. Promising drug candidates will be subjected to further analysis to investigate the biochemical pathways underpinning endogenous stem/progenitor cell differentiation and tissue regeneration.

You will have a biosciences postgraduate degree (preferably a PhD) with a background in molecular genetics or cell biology, and significant experience in managing a research team and/or a research laboratory. Prior research experience of in vitro drug screening in human cell lines, previous work with murine models of retinal disease, and a background in retinal biochemistry and cell biology would be advantageous. We are looking for a highly qualified individual with outstanding academic credentials and an excellent publication record, who can work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks in a milestone-orientated research environment.

The post is full-time for a fixed-term of 1 year in the first instance.

A less experienced candidate may be appointed at Grade 7 (£30,738 – £37,768 p.a.) with a commensurate adjustment in essential criteria, responsibilities and duties.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Wednesday 26 October 2016 will be considered. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
