Research Assistants/Associates in Traffic Movement Microsimulation

Two positions exist, for Research Assistants/Associates in the Department of Engineering, to work on the development of microsimulation techniques for modelling mixed fleets of conventional and autonomous vehicles inter-acting on urban and inter-urban roads.

The post holders will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

- Building and exercising VISSIM and Aimsun microsimulation models

- Developing and exercising modified microsimulation models which incorporate user-developed sub-routines and other software implants for modelling autonomous vehicles

-  Correlating results with real-world test data taken from the vehicle demonstration programme

- Preparation of reports

- Preparation and presentation of results and other specialist material to Programme Sponsors and other external parties

- Preparation and submission of papers for publication in the academic press.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a PhD (or close to obtaining a PhD) in a relevant subject area and a good knowledge of numerical simulation and software development/ programming. Ideally, the applicants will also have a good knowledge of road-based transport systems, traffic movement simulation techniques (microsimulation), and/or the control and operation of autonomous vehicle systems. Preferably, applicants will have at least one year's experience of numerical simulation of transport systems and/or the development (or modelling) of, autonomous control systems or other relevant physical systems.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,023 - £28,982, Research Associate: £28,982 - £37,768.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 October 2018 in the first instance.
