Funding at level 6 (£28,982 - £37,768) is available for a maximum of 36 months; this might have to be shortened up to 31 months depending on the starting salary of the successful candidate.
Applications are invited for a 3 year Research associate position to study the mechanistic basis of chloroplast immunity in the laboratories of Prof. Murray Grant and Dr Alex Jones. The project will investigate how the early chloroplast localised reactive oxygen burst is generated by activated innate immune receptors and how bacterial pathogen effectors attenuate this burst via suppression of photosynthesis through an unknown mechanism involving ABA (see de Torres et al. 2015, Nature Plants). This is a multidisciplinary project using a combination of chlorophyll fluorescence, genetically encoded reporters, pharmacological, genetic and biophysical approaches underpinned by fundamental plant pathology. The biophysical characterisation of chloroplast function involves cross-institutional collaboration with colleagues in Germany.
Applicants should have a PhD in biochemistry/plant science or a related discipline or an equivalent level of professional expertise. Experience in plant pathology, biochemistry and confocal microscopy are essential. Hands-on experience of plant transformation, plant characterisation of biophysical traits is highly desirable. Experience of analysis of photosynthesis is advantageous.
