Stanley Lewis Professorship of Israel Studies

University of Oxford - The School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies in association with St Anne's College

The University of Oxford seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to the Stanley Lewis Professorship of Israel Studies from 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The appointment will be based in the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies and the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography or the Department of Economics or the Department of Politics and International Relations or the Department of Sociology. The Professorship will be held in conjunction with a Governing Body Fellowship at St Anne’s College.

The University of Oxford has long been one of the world’s major centres for the study of the modern Middle East, but there was limited coverage of the state of Israel prior to the establishment of the Stanley Lewis Professorship of Israel Studies in 2011.

During the last 5 years Israel Studies has been anchored within the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of Politics and International Relations, and the Faculty of History. The Stanley Lewis Professor has supervised Master's and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in these departments, delivered an annual series of lectures covering the history and politics of modern Israel, convened a weekly seminar series that brought scores of scholars of Israel Studies from throughout the world to present on their current research, and convened or took part in conferences of relevance to Israel Studies.

The successful candidate will be an Israel Studies scholar of international distinction with an outstanding record of research publication and a proven record of leadership in research and in teaching.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Thursday 8 December 2016.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
