The “Centre for Digital Cultures” (CDC) at Leuphana University Lueneburg – foundation under public law – is seeking to appoint one

  • Research Associate (m/f) at Postdoctoral Level
    (salary group 13 TV-L, 100%, for 1 year; with 1 further year subject to funding)

starting as soon as possible, as part of the “Digital Cultures Research Lab” funded by the “Niedersächsisches Vorab” program.

The Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL) is part of the Centre for Digital Cultures, which aims to develop new takes on digital media and on central phenomena and concepts of digital cultures. The CDC as umbrella organization brings together a large research community with roots in cultural, social and media studies as well as non-university research. The DCRL consists of international fellows, emerging scholars at doc and postdoc level and senior researchers (Prof. Dr. Götz Bachmann, Prof. Dr.
Andreas Bernard, Prof. Dr. Timon Beyes, Prof. Dr. Erich Hörl, Prof. Dr. Martina Leeker and Prof. Dr. Claus Pias, Prof. Dr. Ulli Vilsmaier). It collaborates closely with international partners as well as Lueneburg-based institutes such as the Institute of Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media (ICAM) and the DFG Institute for Advanced Study on Media Cultures of Computer Simulation (MECS). This post holder (m/f) will be formally associated with the Institute of Culture and Aesthetics of Digital Media.

Your tasks:

  • Preparation and support of the activities of the DCRL; this includes managerial tasks as part of a group of postdocs as well as collaborative work of systematically developing new approaches to research in digital cultures
  • Development and establishment of your own research projects and problematics; independent publication activities
  • Conceptual participation in design and delivery of conferences, summer schools and publication projects
  • Participation in drafting and editing of research funding applications
  • Assistance with the support of fellows and junior researchers
  • Support of externell communication of Digital Cultures Research Lab
  • There is no requirement to teach, but own teaching activities are possible


  • Completed excellent PhD/doctoral degree with a clear relation to the thematic fields of the Digital Cultures Research Lab from a historical, theoretical or systematic perspective
  • Excellent proposed research project in tune with the program of the Digital Cultures Research Lab (proposal of a maximum of 3 pages at 1.5 line spacing and font size 12)
  • Track record of publications in digital cultures, media studies and/or artistic research
  • Excellent written and spoken English


  • Experience in ethnographic or historical research in digital cultures
  • Experience in writing grant proposals for research councils, foundations and/or other funding bodies
  • Experience in the organization and conception of academic conferences and summer schools
  • Experience in the conception and implementation of publications (book series and/or journals)
