Doctoral Candidate Position in Modelling Wood Micro-structure at High Temperatures 

The Department of Civil Engineering is seeking an outstanding Doctoral Candidate for research on micro-scale modelling of pyrolysis. For more information of the research and teaching at the department, go to More information on the Fire Safety Engineering -group activities at

The goal of the research is to explain the degradation of mechanical properties and crack formation in chars resulting from the pyrolysis of wood and other bio-based materials. The research will simulate wood micro-structure undergoing changes under complex conditions with use of Generalised Interpolation Material Point Method (GIMP). 

The work is part of the prestigious Academy of Finland –funded project focusing on the multi-scale simulation of pyrolysis and flame retardancy. The results of the work can be used, for example, to improve the fire safety of bio-based materials. 

The successful candidate will be required to cooperate with participants in the project both in Finland and outside of Finland, as well as present the research in international forums. In particular, the project will require a period of stay at the Computational engineering group of the University of Luxembourg. 

Research group
The successful applicant will be part of internationally known group with global-leading expertise in fire and pyrolysis, led by Prof. Hostikka. The numerical part of the research will be mainly led by Prof. Solowski who has multi-year experience in numerical methods and algorithms, in particular in the Material Point Method and GIMP.

Required background: The candidate should have MSc degree in physics, applied mathematics, structural or applied mechanics or similar. 

Expected skills and knowledge: The ideal candidate should understand the fundamentals and numerical methods in solid mechanics and heat and moisture transfer, as well as have C++ programming skills and knowledge of computational techniques. The project requires cooperation within international developer community. Therefore good skills in writing and communicating in English are essential.
