Chair or Readership in Sustainable Civil Engineering

Reader minimum starting salary £57,710; Chair minimum starting salary £73,270 per annum

Applications are invited from outstanding individuals working in the area of sustainable development modelling/analysis applied to civil engineering infrastructure systems, for a Chair or Readership. The level of appointment will be according to experience and achievements to date.

The Department has an excellent international reputation, having achieved the highest rating in all previous UK Research Assessment Exercises and consistently ranking in the top 5 in the world in international league tables.

The applicant will have a broad understanding of the sustainable development agenda and will be expected to conduct high quality research and teaching related to sustainable development, and to foster and lead collaboration with existing academics at Imperial who are focussed on related aspects of infrastructure systems. Application areas of particular interest are:

  • International Development (aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals);
  • Resilience of communities and civil engineering systems;
  • Urban energy systems; and
  • Whole life value (cost, carbon, and wider environmental and social impacts) of civil infrastructure.

Candidates will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to sustainable civil engineering and will already have a substantial reputation based on original research, excellent publications and a clear record of impact. Extensive experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level across a range of subjects relevant to sustainable civil engineering is required, as the appointee will update, coordinate and partially teach an MSc module in Sustainable Development as well as contribute to Undergraduate design projects and supervise Undergraduate and MSc research projects. A track record of successful PhD student supervision and postdoctoral mentoring is essential.  Strong leadership qualities are also required and a track record of securing substantial research funding and sustaining a vigorous research programme.
