PhD Students play a key role in the activities of the UCL Department of Chemical Engineering, in both research and teaching. In order to provide outstanding candidates with the opportunity to pursue a PhD at UCL, the Department of Chemical Engineering has available a number of fully-funded scholarships and applications are open throughout the year. The standard period of the scholarship is 3-4 years and covers tuition fees and a stipend of c.£16,400.
The Department is one of the world’s leading institutions in Chemical Engineering Research, and it covers a broad range of scales from the molecular to the complex systems level. We aim to create pioneering breakthroughs in science and technology and seek solutions to Grand Challenges (such as energy, materials, sustainable manufacturing, health and environment), based on significant advances in fundamental knowledge. To this end, we collaborate widely with other departments in UCL Engineering, Chemistry and beyond, as well as various academic and industrial research groups.

Applicants will have or be expected to obtain a First Class Honours degree at Master’s level (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering or related field. The ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment that tackles questions across various fields of Chemical Engineering is expected. Effective written and verbal communication skills, good time-management, excellent attention to detail and the ability to work in a team are essential.
