The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) in central London has the object of promoting the scholarship and learning of Muslim cultures and societies, historical as well as contemporary, and a better understanding of their relationships with other societies and faiths. The IIS seeks a Translations Officer to assist in the co-ordination of the translation, reviewing and formatting of its curriculum materials in a range of languages.
The IIS’s graded curriculum seek to educate children and youth in the faith, history and cultures of Muslim peoples through a multidisciplinary, civilisational and humanistic approach to the study of Islam which includes content on religion, ethics, history, social studies, the arts, architecture, literature, science, and philosophy.
The Translations Officer will undertake the day-to-day coordination of the translation of educational materials from English into Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Gujarati, Portuguese, Russian, Tajik and Urdu. The Officer will be involved in a range of translation processes, from manuscript preparation to printing. The postholder will also ensure that all translations meet the readability level and pedagogical standards appropriate to each age-group.
Responsibilities will include developing short-term and medium-term work plans, recruitment of contractual translators and reviewers, working closely with community institutions, tracking translations, assisting with the final formatting and proof-checking of materials, and ensuring that translation projects meet the assigned budgets and timelines. Duties will also include translating materials in the candidate’s language(s) of expertise.
Ideal candidates will possess a post-graduate degree in Translation Studies, Linguistics or other language related discipline. Familiarity with one or more of the languages will be an asset. Candidates will have experience in coordinating translation projects, preferably in an educational publishing environment, excellent administrative and organisational skills, along with good interpersonal skills. Applicants will be experienced in translating materials in one or more of the languages listed above. Familiarity with Quark Xpress, In-Page and/or InDesign software is also desirable.
