Professor of History and Head of Department (Humanities)

Northumbria University - Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences

We are looking to appoint an outstanding academic leader with an international research profile as Professor of History. You will also serve as Head of the Department of Humanities, within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences for the first 5 years of your appointment. Following a period of sabbatical leave you will then have the opportunity to return to the Department as Professor to focus on research and teaching.

The Department of Humanities has grown in recent years and currently has 70 academic staff, across three key disciplines: History, Literature and Creative Writing and Linguistics. Humanities was central to Northumbria’s success in REF 2014. The quality of outputs in History and English placed both disciplines in the top 20 in the UK. The department is also focussed on teaching excellence, with History at Northumbria ranked 4th in the UK for Overall Student Satisfaction in the most recent NSS.

With more than 900 students, including a growing community of 40 PGR students the Department works with a range of cultural partners and houses an AHRC doctoral training centre in Heritage as part of a consortium of northern Universities.

As a member of the Faculty Executive team, you will lead, grow and develop the future of the department, in line with our REF success and the University Vision. You will be supported by the Department’s strong team of Professors, and will be responsible for leading and managing the Academic team in delivering excellence in all areas of activity. In addition, you will make a strong personal contribution to the academic profile of the Department and Faculty through your contribution to research and teaching

As an experienced Professor, your ability to think and act strategically adapting to the changing external environment is key to success in this role. You will have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and proven ability to influence and facilitate the development of others to achieve desired results. A successful record of leadership, management and development is essential.
