Queen Mary University of London’s (QMUL) activities are very diverse, leading to a complex role for the health and safety advisory staff in the provision of health and safety advice to support teaching and research activities. H&S advice supports the decision making of staff in regard to compliance with H&S legislation and good practice in H&S.

The post holder will attend Faculty health and safety meetings, support local coordinators and assist with the identification of training needs of staff and post-graduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Faculty. He/she will be expected to develop and deliver relevant training programmes to Faculty members and participate in QMUL-wide health and safety training delivery. The post holder will advise on suitable and sufficient risk assessment and risk control of the Faculty’s teaching and research activities. He/she will assist with the investigation of 'lost time' incidents and significant near misses/dangerous occurrences, and will support Faculty safety coordinators to carry out inspections and other health and safety monitoring tasks.

As the QMUL Audit Lead, the post-holder is responsible for ensuring that QMUL meets health and safety legislative requirements and the requirements of its Health and Safety Policy Statement, framework arrangements and safety plan. To help accomplish this, the Audit Lead will be responsible for co-ordinating a fully comprehensive Health and Safety Inspection, carrying out monitoring and audits across all areas of QMUL.

The post holder will carry out health and safety monitoring activities and audits to a professional standard across all activities of QMUL, and advise on achieving robust systems of loss control and risk management. They will prepare and coordinate a full programme of inspections and audits to measure effectiveness of safety management and demonstrate compliance with prescribed standards of health and safety. They will provide essential reports to management in a standard format, recommend actions required to improve performance and monitor progress of correction actions.

The post holder is required to deputise for the Director of Health and Safety in their absence and take lead responsibility for specific H&S topics as agreed with the Director.
