The world-wide trend of interconnectedness in information technologies has been stimulating renewed research interests on nonlinear photonic devices for optical networks. The deployment of the future all-optical networks heavily relies on the success of the optical switching devices and photonic integration technologies.
To address this urgent need, the project student will work on the design, fabrication, and characterization of optical switches using state-of-the-art nanofabrication technologies to achieve ultralow-power-consumption and high-speed optical switches that are desirable components for the next generation all-optical networks.
This PhD project is fully funded by our industry partner CIP Technologies (Huawei). The student will carry on PhD studies at Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Sheffield in close collaboration with CIP (Huawei) at Ipswich and the EPSRC National Centre for III-V Technologies at Sheffield. Applicants are expected to have a closely related background in Semiconductor Physics, Optics and Photonics Technologies, or Microelectronics. A full studentship with maximum £28,000/year is available for three years to cover the tuition fee and living stipend. Both domestic and oversea students are welcome to apply for this position.
