Foreign and Commonwealth Office - Multilateral Research Group

About the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe.  The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices.  We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, and the Commonwealth.

The role of Senior Research Analyst

Joining us as a Senior Research Analyst, you’ll provide policy-focused research, analysis and advice on international institutions – including the United Nations, the Commonwealth, Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe.  You’ll also research and analyse a wide range of themes, including human rights, conflict, sanctions and war crimes.   Working with people at all levels, from desk officers to Ministers, you’ll play an integral role in policy-making as you provide policy advice, expert input and detailed research to meet specific policy needs.  Your work will be varied as you research past precedents, provide comparative lessons or apply your expert knowledge, but you’ll consistently produce in-depth research and analysis to a tight deadline.

The work you’ll be involved in is diverse, so you’ll develop a wide breadth of skills and knowledge.  This role is an excellent opportunity to represent and advance UK interests and policies and develop your own skills and knowledge.

What we are looking for

Perhaps you’re working in academia, an NGO, or the private sector, or you’ve got other experience of a research role.  Wherever you’re from it’s important that you have a PhD in International Relations, War or Strategic Studies, or Human Rights.  Alternatively, you hold a Masters-level qualification in these same areas, along with significant professional experience in a relevant field.  Proactive and motivated, it goes without saying that you are an excellent communicator with a talent for setting out the answers to complex problems clearly and succinctly for a non-specialist audience.  You also have the ability to form long-lasting professional relationships, explain complex issues and influence at all levels.  You’ll need to be happy to travel around the UK and across the world.
