Thank you for your interest in the position of Sous chef at Kent Union. We are a successful, vibrant and exciting organisation with a bright future ahead of us. We have achieved a great deal in the last few years, more than doubling in size to our current £10million turnover, 500 employees and 2,000+ volunteers.
We were re-accredited with Investor in People Gold status in December 2014, and we were the first student’s union in the UK to achieve Investing in Volunteers status and we have been included in the Sunday Times 100 Best Not-For-Profit Organisations to Work For, for 7 years, placed 25th for 2016.
The Catering and Licensed Trade Department currently operates three outlets on the Canterbury Campus, which include a night club (The Venue), coffee shop (Library Café) and a sports bar and restaurant (Woodys). Kent Union will also operate a soon to be opened bar/café on the Medway Campus known as The Deep End.
The post holder will be joining Kent Union at a very exciting time and a transformational phase for the department as it continues to develop and grow its catering provision across the Canterbury and Medway Campuses. We are currently finalising plans for a £3m new Students’ Union building at Parkwood, Canterbury that will see the closure of our current Woody’s Sports Bar and Essentials Shop and following a review of their offers, concepts and design will see them relocate to this new building alongside additional social study and flexible activities space. Due to open in autumn 2017, the Parkwood Building will be a significant enhancement of the largest student accommodation area on campus.
The post-holder will support The Head Chef and be responsible for student Kitchen staff. They will produce fresh, quality dishes that adapt to suit seasonal trends and will support the Head chef to plan menu’s that cater for the diverse student body. The post-holder will support the head chef to control and manage the food cost in line with budget, source ingredients and control production and portions in line with agreed specifications. The post-holder will be responsible for all areas of kitchen management and will ensure that Woodys’ catering provision is of a consistently exceptional standard under the direction from there Head Chef.
