General Description
Applications are invited for the position of Associate Professor (AP2) in Environmental Health in the Department of Public Health at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). The successful candidate is expected to develop and deliver undergraduate modules in public health and be available to start no later than January 2017. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in public health, environmental health or related fields and are expected to have strong records of scholarship, funded research, excellence in teaching and advising, and service in the area of public health. Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The University now has close to 10,000 students studying on campus. The language of instruction is English. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP ($195 billion in 2012). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there is a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.

An initial contract of up to three years will be offered, contingent on successful review following a period of probation. Members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.  The salary range for the position is 29,664 – 40,497 RMB/month (Associate Professor). Main Responsibility and Accountability
The position is accountable to the Head of the Department of Public Health.


  1. Develop, deliver and evaluate teaching modules in environmental health.
  2. Attract and successfully supervise postgraduate students working in the field of public health.


  1. Initiate, lead and conduct collaborative research projects with academic colleagues, community and industry partners.
  2. Produce high quality publications within the field of public health.
  3. Secure external research funding and promote research excellence.
  4. Pursue research excellence in Public Health and related areas and disseminate research results at domestic and international seminars, workshops and conferences.


  1. Provide effective academic leadership in the establishment of strategic directions in environmental health in the Department of Public Health.
  2. Provide leadership, including as Programme Director for designated periods, for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including course development, teaching coordination, marketing and stakeholder management.
  3. Provide effective mentorship and leadership, inspiring and empowering others.
  4. Exercise a high degree of personal professional autonomy and act as an expert resource.

  • A record of outstanding achievement in higher education and scholarship.
  • A record of effective teaching experience in the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • A record of research publications in environmental health.
  • Excellent communication skills, a commitment to the importance of scholarship and diversity, a spirit of entrepreneurship and an understanding of the role of the university in the world.
  • Familiarity with the new teaching media and visual communication
  • Familiarity with programme accreditation processes for environmental and public health.
  • Ability to effectively present technical information to professional and public audiences.
  • Ability to direct inter-disciplinary programmes of research.
  • Knowledge of current trends in environmental health research.


  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of colleagues and students.
  • Ability to work flexibly, without close supervision and meet deadlines.

Qualifications and Experience


  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institute in a discipline related to environmental health.
  • Experience in effective academic administration.
  • Experience in the development of curricula for environmental health programmes.
  • Extensive experience in teaching courses related to environmental health.
  • Experience in working with other academic institutions, government agencies, private companies, and other stakeholders to enhance academic programs.
  • Experience complying with and directing programme accreditation efforts.
  • Experience in mentoring post-graduate student research.


  • Experience in administration of a graduate environmental health programme will be highly valued.
