We are looking to appoint a Research Assistant for a position funded by the Wellcome Trust to join an internationally recognised group working in obesity headed by Professor Sadaf Farooqi. Our aim is to understand the genetic and molecular basis of obesity and diabetes (Wheeler et al. Nature Genetics 2013; Pearce et al. Cell 2013; www.goos.org.uk). The team participates in a wide variety of collaborative projects, performing exome sequencing for disease mutation discovery followed by the functional characterisation of new disease associated mutations. Your work will have important implications for the clinical management of patients, including the development of better patient stratification and the identification of novel therapeutic targets.
You will be based in the Institute of Metabolic Science, where you will work within a vibrant, interdisciplinary research team. In the laboratory, the successful applicant will be responsible for PCR and sequencing of genes associated with obesity and will use standard and new molecular biology, biochemistry and cell imaging techniques to characterize the cellular consequences of human mutations on proteins.
You should have a degree in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology or closely related field. You will be required to enter and handle a range of data and will also support the running of the laboratory; excellent IT and organisational skills are essential.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment. This appointment also requires a Research Passport application.
