The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a publicly funded organisation that is responsible for supporting, co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. Our uniqueness lies in the breadth of our remit and the sheer diversity of our portfolio, as we harness our world-leading expertise, facilities and resources to drive science and technology forward.
STFC operates some of the world’s most advanced facilities such as ISIS. ISIS is a source of pulsed neutrons and muons located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. The facility performs cutting-edge research into structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level.
About The Role
A vacancy exists for a Mechanical Support Technician in the ISIS Mechanical Engineering Section which is part of the ISIS Accelerator Division. You will be based in the main workshop and also work in all areas of the ISIS accelerator and extraction beam-lines.
You will report to the Mechanical Section Leader within the Accelerator Engineering Group and will be expected to produce high quality machining work (including turning and milling) to close tolerances working to sketches, engineering drawings and verbal instructions as appropriate and to produce appropriate jigs and fittings as necessary.
You will be responsible for a given area of work associated with the build, assembly, modification and installation of new projects connected with the ISIS accelerator.
You will initiate the repair and maintenance of a wide range of installed components for a given area of the injector, synchrotron and EPB. These will include a wide and diverse range of magnets, diagnostic monitors, UHV and RF systems. You will also be responsible for given areas of work for the work of others including apprentices and contractors and be able to develop appropriate work plans and be able to manage financial resources.
You will establish and maintain safe and efficient working arrangements for you and all staff working under your control with particular reference to work in radiation controlled areas.
You will have a Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (or relevant experience) and a high level of skill/experience as a machinist and mechanical fitting.
It is desirable for you to have ONC in mechanical engineering or equivalent (or equivalent experience) and experience of CNC tooling and programming.
You will have recognised formal training for example a full apprenticeship or full time study and possess experience of producing high quality machined and assembles components, ideally working in a large-scale scientific engineering environment.
You will have a sound understanding of mechanical engineering workshop practice and appropriate workshop safety procedures and their correct application is required.
You will be computer literate and be able to demonstrate use of Microsoft Office software products.
You must be willing to enter radio logically designated areas and be willing to participate in/assist in out of hours break downs. You will also have an interest of keeping ISIS fully operational, willingness to resolve faults and problems during silent hours would be a distinct advantage.
You will have the ability to communicate effectively with all colleagues throughout ISIS Accelerator Division and have good writing skills and record keeping.
You will be able to work on own initiative, be proactive and take responsibility for task completion. You will be able to fault-find and resolve technical problems.
You will be self-motivate and able to interact well with others. You will be fit and mobile, willing to carry out mechanical practical work and be able to work in restricted spaces and handle awkwardly shaped components.
An excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages. A relocation allowance is available where applicable.
