Land Use Quantitative Analyst & Data Manager

Scotland's Rural College (SRUC)

Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) is unique in Scotland and one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our ambitious and exciting vision is to work at local, national and international levels, leading innovation and sustainable development in the agriculture and rural sectors. SRUC has four divisions, SRUC Research, Education, Finance and Professional Services, and SAC Consulting.

As part of the research within the Land Economy, Environment and Society Group we handle significantly large data sets on farming businesses, their biophysical, land and climate characteristics which links to our work on land use, farming viability and value chain modelling.

The group is looking to recruit a researcher who has a strong and dynamic skill-set in both quantitative research methods and data management. We require an individual who has undertaken analysis of large data sets and underlying programming skills in relational databases. While having particular skills in quantitative analysis the post holder needs to be willing to work in a multi-disciplinary environment of agricultural and environmental economists and quantitative sociologists within the Land Economy, Environment and Society Research Group.

The post holder will explore linking of numerous data sets, including livestock movement data, business holding data and farm account data to understand issues of resilience and adaptation within the Scottish rural economy. A particular interest is the role of network resilience within the agricultural economy but the post holder will be encouraged to develop their own research agenda based on the substantial data resources we hold.

The post holder will be expected to handle these large data sets, explore opportunities for linking and develop outputs for a range of audiences. He/she will also be expected to publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals and to work with colleagues in generating external research income.

The post will be based at SRUC King’s Buildings, Edinburgh and will be full time for a fixed term until 31st July 2018 with the possibility of extension.

Interviews will be held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 2nd November 2016.
