Research Associate (Social Psychology)

The Graduate School of Education is seeking to appoint a Research Associate with expertise in social psychology and quantitative data analysis to work with Dr. Shelley McKeown Jones on an ESRC funded research project “The diversity effect: intergroup interactions and the impact of diversity on young people's attitudes and academics”.

The aim of this project is to conduct research which integrates psychological, educational and geographical perspectives on diversity in order to inform interventions to promote positive outcomes for youth in Bristol and other diverse societies. The project will comprise a large-scale collection of survey responses, an analysis of classroom behaviour and collaboration with local schools and teachers to design and evaluate an intervention.

The post holder will be required to work along with Dr. Shelley McKeown Jones in reviewing the relevant research literature, collecting and analysing data, preparing academic papers for publication and posting materials on the project website. 

Applicants should have completed or be about to complete a Ph.D in psychology or a relevant field; have knowledge of social psychological theories, such as intergroup contact theory and social identity theory; be experienced in designing surveys and analysing quantitative data; have experience of managing data and working within ethical guidelines; have a record of publishing in academic journals; be able to work independently, as well as part of a team, and have excellent communication and organisational skills.

The post will start on 1st March 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter), and is offered on an open ended basis with funding confirmed until 31 August 2018. The post is equivalent to 0.5 FTE over the duration of the project, however, working hours will fluctuate according to the timetable of the project. The exact working pattern is to be negotiated with Shelley McKeown Jones.  

It is expected that interviews will be held on 8 December 2016.
